Month of October rears its ugly head once again and with it another chance at thrills and scares under a cold, full moon. Werewolf Irish Blood Red Ale from Britain’s Newcastle Ale (yes! that Newcastle) might just be able to quench my undying thirst for the next great, craft beer.
So we just got back from a ride up the coast. Sarah and I gave a friend, Rachel, a ride back to the North Creek Farm where she works. It’s way down off of route 209 in Phippsburg and they got this lil country store and they even have a beer case. SCORE! Rachel keeps the case well-stocked with an awesome brew selection. I actually did a double take at the Werewolf beer. Huh? Newcastle makes varieties other than Brown Ale? Just got back from the ride and now I’m diving into a cold pint of this drink. I really don’t know what to expect from this beer. Over the years, many a rough morning were had at the hands of Newcastle Brown Ale. Damn! I love Newcastle. Cool label. Actual werewolves win many points in my book!
Wow! Mmmm...lemme ponder for a bit.
Real fucking good! It’s got a sweet flavor right up front. A touch of sour dances delicately at the middle of the tongue and the back detects a wicked smooth finish.
Looks boss, too. The photo might not do it justice but it’s a really nice looking brown color. Not red. More like a root beer-color. It’s slightly lighter than say, Barq’s, and more dynamic, too.
Been working on this beer blog for a couple of weeks now, reviewing Fall beers and so far, Newcastle’s Werewolf, is winning my seasonal affections! It’s a Limited Edition so I would imagine it’s hard to find. If you can, do. If not, just enjoying reading about it at Portland Beer Drinkers.
